Meet Neil
Operational Trading Manager

My name's Neil. I'm the Operational Trading Manager in Energy Management, and I work at Cathcart in Glasgow.

ScottishPower's a big business with a lot of international opportunities, opportunities right across its UK businesses as well, and it's got a very good reputation of training and development.

I joined the Company as a senior power trader, hedging the company's financial exposure to forward power prices, so locking in prices for its generation and customer retail businesses, and from there I moved on into more structured products, dealing in carbon, sparks and dark spreads but, also, then into the coal trading team. So I learnt a lot about the international coal trading business. And from there, I've moved on to my current role as Operational Trading Manager.

I really enjoy the variety of the current role, take this week, for example, this afternoon I'm going to our powerstation at Cockenzie to discuss the financial performance of the station, and then later this week I'll be going to Madrid to talk to our parent company and discuss plant scheduling models. International travel is an aspect of the company's activities, but it's not every week.

I'd recommend ScottishPower to a friend because it values your contribution, there's a lot of encouragement to get up from behind your desk and discuss issues with other people from other parts of the business. So it's really just an opportunity to have a career, not just a job.
