Meet Brian
Senior Civil Project Engineer

I am Brian, I work at ScottishPower's Commercial Development construction arm based at Longannet Power Station in Central Fife, Scotland.

I decided to work for ScottishPower, because after 15 years of working in the water industry in Scotland I decided it was time for a change professionally. ScottishPower has a portfolio of hydro schemes within its asset management team, and it was a challenge to work on some of these projects.

ScottishPower does give you an opportunity to move within the business, and also allows you to develop both professionally and personally. The most enjoyable and stimulating aspect of my work is that working in the construction team it's a very reactive atmosphere, you're working on site with the contractor, and day-to-day occurrences happen and you have to react to that, depending on where your field of expertise is and what knowledge is required. I like the challenges that that involves, not just doing the same thing day in, day out, I like the variety that the role gives me.

A typical day can be reviewing specifications documents submitted by the contractors for approval, looking at risk assessments, carrying out health and safety audits, carrying out contract progress meetings with the contractors, inspecting contractor's work, so there's quite a lot of variety there to do. I would recommend ScottishPower to a friend, because it issues you with a real challenge, both professional and personally.
