Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve probably got some questions about our modern apprenticeship programmes. We’ve answered the most popular questions we receive on this page, but if you still haven’t got the answers you need, please email: recruitmentline@scottishpower.com

What are the minimum requirements for joining?

We ask for at least 3 GCSEs or equivalent at level 3/grade C or above in English, Mathematics and a Science. You’ll also need to be a highly motivated team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

What are the timescales relating to the programme?

The programme will last three or four years depending upon your chosen discipline.

How often would I travel back home?

You’ll normally be entitled to travel home every weekend, depending on travelling distance. Reasonable travelling expenses will be reimbursed.

How much could I earn at the end of my apprenticeship?

As a time-served tradesperson within ScottishPower you can earn from circa £18,000 – £22,000 (subject to review in 2009). Owing to the nature of our business, weekend and shift working will be required.

Is there a pension available?

We offer a competitive defined contribution pension arrangement and the opportunity to join a final salary pension arrangement after ten years.

Will travel expenses relating to the selection process be reimbursed?

All reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed on production of valid receipts. You’ll receive an expense form at the assessment centre. However, please note that we must approve flight and accommodation expenses prior to being booked.

Do I need a driving licence?

You’re expected to have or be working towards a full UK driving licence.

Where would I be based once appointed?

On completion of the scheme, you could be appointed in any of our locations in Scotland, England or Wales. We’ll take into consideration our business requirements and your home location.

Would I be supervised at all times?

During working hours, you’ll be supervised at all times. Out of working hours, you’ll be expected to behave in a responsible manner.

What would the future hold for me at ScottishPower?

With so many different career routes, there are many possibilities for the future. If you perform well and show drive and ability, you’ll have opportunities to progress your career and achieve your ambitions.

When you apply you'll receive an automated response to confirm that your application has been submitted. We’ll acknowledge your application within three weeks. If you still haven’t heard from us, please email recruitmentline@scottishpower.com or call 01698 396465.

Will I be required to go through a medical if I’m offered a place on one of your modern apprenticeship programmes?

Yes. All offers of employment are made subject to satisfactory completion of a medical assessment and receipt of satisfactory references following testing under our Policy on Alcohol & Drugs.

What provisions do you make for people with a disability?

If you require adjustments to take part in our selection process, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs. If you’re successful in the selection process, we’ll then discuss with you what adjustments, if any, would need to be made.

Will I be required to work overtime?

In exceptional circumstances, you may be required to work outside of your normal contractual hours.
